DRIVE-IN vs SHUTTLES

Comparison of Drive-in with Shuttles

The VOYATZOGLOU Group as a System Integrator offers a wide range of solutions in storage and product management from internationally renowned international companies, which have developed technologies that happen to find multiple applications and respond differently to the same demand (client request). One such example is the advantages of a system with a Carrier-Shuttles function over a Drive-in system.

These two storage systems which require the same amount of surface storage space (in any case much less space than a conventional warehouse) are best suited for production warehouses where small numbers of SKUs are stored and handled in larger batches.

The Shuttle system can handle more SKUs, having the ability to store multiple codes in the same shuttle, unlike the Drive in system where this is not possible as pallets are stored inside out and bottom up with the same code. So in case we want to insert new pallets we have to empty the funnel in Drive in because the new pallets inserted will hide the previous ones, whereas in the case of Shuttle we can have a different code on each level.

Also, the Shuttle storage system has the possibility to "recompact" the pallets, for optimal management of the LOT number. For example, if a pallet is not completely empty, the Shuttle-Shuttle can bring all the pallets to one side of the storage system, enabling the storage of new pallets (of a different LOT) on the other side.

It can also work with FIFO procedure by designing a corridor on both sides of the system

Last but not least, the SHUTTLE system avoids bumps on the rack frame because the forklifts do not enter into the shed but perform their work in front of it leaving only the shuttle-carrier to enter.

Comparison of required surface area and performance between Classic Drive-in Palletizer and the use of Shuttles.

The Shuttle storage system is clearly more space and time efficient than conventional storage, but it is also clearly superior to Drive in, offering greater efficiency and functionality but also more "real" storage spaces as it leaves significantly fewer empty spaces, giving a return on investment in a shorter period of time.
